Historic Preservation

  • Mark the graves of Revolutionary War patriots
  • Purchased a drop down panel describing the night "George Washington Really Did Sleep Here" displayed in the Port Tobacco Courthouse in 2018
  • Researched, designed, and placed a pull-up exhibit called "Proprietors in Port Tobacco" at Stagg Hall in historic Port Tobacco in 2017
  • Researched, designed, and placed an exhibit called "Women of the American Revolution in the Maryland Veterans Museum in 2016
  • Transcribed old Stone family letters for the National Park Service in 2013-2014

 

Education

  • Promote contests and awards for students 
    • Junior American Citizens Awards - Over 35 national winners were sponsored by Port Tobacco Chapter NSDAR in 2019
    • American History Essay Contest 
    • Christopher Columbus Essay Contest 
    • DAR Good Citizens Award
    • Charles County History Day Award
  • Send money and box top labels to the DAR schools.
  • Promote scholarships for students
  • Promote literacy - many of our members work on the Literacy Council, Library Board, or in the schools
  • Participate and provide an award to a student for Charles County History Day
  • Facilitate local field trips for 8th Grade History Classes (Thomas Stone NHS and Port Tobacco Village)
  • Sponsor a local high school team to participate in the "We the People" competition

 

Patriotism

  • Volunteer at, donate items and money to, and thank the veterans at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home
  • Collect about 1200 diapers each year for the USO at Indian Head, Maryland
  • Following the closing of the USO at Indian Head, members began contributing coffee and snacks for the military there.
  • Award a JROTC medal to a deserving senior at each of the seven high schools in Charles County
  • Lay a wreath on the grave of Thomas Stone (signer of the Declaration of Independence) each year on Independence Day
  • Give Community Service awards to deserving individuals
  • Participate in naturalization ceremonies
  • Acquire a proclamation from the county commissioners and set up a Constitution Week display in the La Plata Public Library
  • Sponsored the DAR Medal of Honor winners for 2016 (George Skypeck) and 2017 (Larry Abell)
  • Sponsored the DAR Americanism winner for 2017 (Col. Bill Tart)
